Caltrans Intercity Commuter Rail Study

This study was conducted for Caltrans and represented the preliminary stage in California’s efforts to promote commuter rail service along existing passenger and freight rail corridors. Corridors examined by Transmetrics and the project teams were:

  • San Francisco/Sacramento – Redding
  • Los Angeles – Santa Barbara
  • San Luis Obispo – Salinas – Oakland
  • Los Angeles – Barstow – Las Vegas
  • Los Angeles – Palm Springs – Yuma

Inventory was developed through a review of available information on existing and potential intercity rail passenger service routes. A survey of all potentially available and suitable rights-of-way for such service development was completed.
